X-Ray Technician Programs

Career description: X-ray Technician schedules, prepares, performs and processes X-ray, EKG and EEG examinations, using film producing and processing equipment; positions and instructs patients undergoing testing; prepares and maintains film files; and maintains equipment and supplies inventory. Radiologic technologists are the medical personnel who perform diagnostic imaging examinations and administer radiation therapy treatments. They are educated in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection and basic patient care. They may specialize in a specific imaging technique, such as bone densitometry , cardiovascular-interventional radiography , computed tomography , mammography , magnetic resonance imaging , nuclear medicine , quality management , sonography or general radiography.
Wages of radiologic technologists: Wages of radiologic technologists are competitive with other health professionals who have similar educational backgrounds. A 2001 survey by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists showed that wages averaged about $16 per hour for entry-level radiographers and $20 per hour for entry-level radiation therapists. With experience, additional education or supervisory responsibilities, wages can reach an average of $20 to $25 per hour. In addition, many employers allow radiologic technologists to work flexible schedules, including part-time or evenings. Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Radiologic Technology Program: The mission of the program is to provide the medical community with entry-level radiologic technologists competent to perform diagnostic medical radiography. The program integrates both general and technical education to ensure that graduates can meet the multiple demands of rapidly changing technology in medical practice. Radiographers are highly skilled professionals qualified by education to perform imaging examinations and accompanying responsibilities at the request of physicians qualified to prescribe and/or perform radiologic procedures.
Associate of Science (AS) in Radiation Therapy Program: The mission of the program is to provide the medical community with entry-level radiation therapists by providing them with knowledge and technical skills, a broad-based general education, and an understanding of, and compassion for, cancer patients and their families. Radiation Therapists prepare patients for radiation treatment, position patients under a linear accelerator, and administer pre-prescribed doses of ionizing radiation to specific parts of the body. They may also assist in treatment planning, patient support and care, and brachytherapy.
